Taber Abrasion Testing

Taber Abrasion Testing

Taber 5155 Rotary Abraser as used for abrasion testing at Aerofin Laboratories Ltd.

Taber Abrasion testing is used to test the abrasion resistance of materials, Abrasion Testing at Aerofin Labs is conducted using the Taber Rotary Abraser. This method is used primarily in the field of materials science and quality control.  It is compliant with more than 150 standards in the fields of paints, plastics, wood, glass, concrete, packaging, textiles, ceramics and more. Aerofin, commonly work to the following standards.

Aerofin Laboratories primarily use Taber Abrasion testing for metal coated/painted surfaces, but it can also be used for textiles, leather, rubber & many other materials.

Rotary abrasion testing helps in evaluating the durability, wear resistance, and quality of a material or coating. Providing valuable information about how well a material can withstand the effects of abrasion and friction, which is crucial for assessing its suitability for specific applications. The results of this test can be used to compare different materials, optimise formulations, and make informed decisions regarding material selection in industries where wear and tear are significant concerns. Equipment:

Abrasion testing samples on the turntables of the Taber 5155 Rotary Abraser at Aerofin Laboratories.

The Taber Abraser consists of a turntable that holds the test specimen and a pair of abrasive wheels. To simulate real-life wear conditions, specimens are mounted to the rotating turntable and the abrasive wheels are positioned on top of it. The turntable is rotated while the abrasive wheels apply a certain amount of force onto the specimen’s surface. As the turntable rotates, the abrasive wheels wear down the material’s surface, mimicking the friction and abrasion that can occur in real-world scenarios.

The test parameters in Taber rotary abrasion include factors like the type and grit size of the abrasive wheels, the applied load, and the number of rotations. These parameters can be adjusted to simulate different levels of abrasion intensity and mimic various real-world conditions.
